I’m a mama to two boys, Fig and Cedar (and a sassy dachshund). I started cooking with my son, Fig, when he was 12 months old. As most mama’s know, looking occupied is the easiest and quickest way to have a toddler pulling at your pant legs in a desperate attempt to get into your arms. And nothing says ” hey i’m busy” than dicing onions. So in an attempt to actually finish a meal,  I started giving my toddler little jobs around the kitchen and eventually cooking together became a part of our daily rhythm. This blog is a journey of culinary adventures with young folks. You’ll find nutritious simple plant-based recipes that Fig and I have developed together through much trial, heaps of error and the occasional culinary calamity.

We hope you enjoy,

Love Fig, Cedar, Mafalda and Kari  (that’s me).

Hi, Kari & Fig! So happy to have found you and your blog via Foodiebabies 🙂 Looking forward to following along because I have TWO toddler boys (they’re 15 mos) and it is certainly a challenge to cook while keeping a close eye on them. Your blog posts are amazing – GREAT photos. I have a feeling I’m going to be a big fan ❤ ❤

Two little boys..Mama, you have your hands full! So glad you found us! Getting dinner on the table every night with little kids always seems like such an epic production. Sometimes its just easier to have them cook with you than risk what they might do if left to their own devices 🙂 There’s that scary few moments when you realize, omg, its been quiet for a full minute….something sinister must be up!

What a lovely blog! As a mother of 3 I know how challenging it can be to get a wholesome meal done in a timely fashion! Involving our kids can be a wonderful way to teach them about good nutrition. I look forward to reading more of your posts!!

HI Kari, thanks for stopping by my blog. I love to see young children cooking, and it yields such geat rewards in the future (My babies are 19, 17 and 13 now, and they are all competent cooks, who have a pretty good understanding about good nutrition, even if they don’t always live it out every day!) LOok forward to seeing more of your adventures. margaret

Thank you! So glad to hear your babies are all competent cooks. It’s such an important life skill that’s not valued as it once was. I’m so glad to connect with other parents to love to share the art of cooking with their little ones.

How old are your toddlers now? I keep hoping that if I have my 2 year old help me cook something then she’ll be more inclined to eat it, but she doesn’t really make the connection by the time it comes out of the oven or off the stove. Have you found your kids to be more adventurous eaters if they help make it?

Hello! I have a 2.5 year old and a 4 month old 🙂 My two year old is certainly more inclined to eat things he cooked BUT most of what he does is graze during the cooking process. This is why I typically elicit his help for veggie chopping 🙂 Things really started to change about 3 months ago. He is a MUCH better eater now. It’s like a lightbulb went off and he’ll usually try everything where as before he would reject something based solely on it’s visual appearance. At one point I swear all he’d eat is cheese, fruit and bread! We’re in a much better place now and I think having him cook with me regularly really paid off.

    Dear Kari,
What a beautiful blog you have set up! I love the concept of sharing time in the kitchen with your boys, making what would be a chore into beautiful memories and opportunities to expand on their creativity. I especially admire your the emphasis on quality whole foods…teaching them such good habits from such a young age!
Looking forward to following on such a sweet journey 🙂

Thank you so much for all your sweet comments! I really enjoyed reading them all. Cooking with toddlers was born out of necessity due to my cranky son and my ability to get anything done…but now it’s something I look forward to every day!! I could live without the cooking aftermath mess though 🙂
